Morcon served as general contractor for the Baggage Claim Expansion and Modernization at MSP Terminal 1—part of the larger Terminal 1 Operational Improvements Program recognized as a 2025 Finance & Commerce Top Project.
The multi-year project transformed the passenger experience while improving the complex systems working behind the scenes. Morcon expanded the baggage claim footprint, upgraded 11 carousels and their associated baggage handling systems, relocated overhead conveyors and ductwork, and helped create brighter, more open waiting areas with raised ceilings and improved passenger flow.
Because MSP remained fully operational throughout construction, every phase required careful planning and precise execution. Morcon installed up to 7,000 linear feet of temporary baggage conveyor to maintain service as permanent systems were replaced. Crews frequently worked overnight and during carefully coordinated shutdowns, removing and recycling temporary systems as each new carousel came online.
The completed space provides 50% more baggage presentation area while incorporating RFID baggage tracking, improved ventilation, expanded meet-and-greet space, durable finishes, and Minnesota-inspired lighting and sound features. The result is a more efficient, welcoming baggage claim experience designed to serve millions of travelers each year.
