Safety at Morcon: A Culture of Proactivity and Connection

At Morcon, safety is more than compliance—it’s a cornerstone of our culture. That commitment was on full display during our recent Annual Safety Meeting. With over 90 team members attending across both days, the event served as a powerful reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility—from superintendents and laborers to HR and leadership.

Building a Strong Safety Foundation: AWAIR and “Right to Know”

Each year, Morcon refreshes our team on OSHA-mandated programs like the AWAIR Program (A Workplace Accident and Injury Reduction Program) and the Right to Know Act, covering chemical hazards, updates in legislation, and critical safety procedures. Superintendents received updated manuals—available in both print and digital formats—to ensure their teams are equipped with the most current guidelines.

Bringing Office and Field Together

These meeting are especially meaningful because of the increased interaction between our field and office staff—team members who don’t always get a chance to connect face-to-face. The result? Positive engagement, rich dialogue, and a strong sense of unity across departments.

“It’s not just a meeting. It’s about getting the whole team in one room to talk, listen, and learn from one another,” said Lynsey Sahli, Human Resources Manager, who coordinates safety training and documentation.

Fire Safety and Prevention: A Hot Topic for 2025

Among this year’s key safety topics was Fire Protection and Prevention, led by Clay Bollin, CSP, ARM, EMR. From understanding fire extinguisher ratings to the importance of proper storage for flammable materials, this presentation reinforced how preparation and awareness can mitigate serious risks.

Additional hot topics included:

  • Silica exposure and updated OSHA standards
  • Soft tissue injury prevention
  • Concrete safety and operations
  • Noise-induced hearing loss
  • Heat stress management

Proactive Safety Culture, Powered by Communication

Morcon’s Safety Committee, made up of rotating members including superintendents, foremen, HR, and leadership, meets regularly to identify risks and review safety practices. Topics range from PPE standards and jobsite cleanliness to updated regulations and injury prevention.

These meetings are followed by Monday Toolbox Talks, delivered by superintendents to their crews and signed off as part of the accountability process. All meeting minutes are documented and reviewed to ensure action items are completed.

A Culture of Trust and Accountability

With a current EMR of .73 and zero injury reports in 2024, Morcon’s results speak for themselves. But beyond the numbers is a culture built on open communication and proactive engagement.

“Our superintendents know they can come to us with concerns and questions,” said Lynsey Sahli, Human Resources Manager. “We trust them, and they trust us. That relationship keeps our jobsites clean, safe, and efficient.”

The Role of Leadership

Morcon’s leadership team, including General Superintendent Mark Jordan and Concrete Division Lead Tony Hall, plays a hands-on role in scheduling, communicating, and reinforcing safe practices. With many projects ramping up this summer, especially in school construction, their guidance remains essential in maintaining safety standards.

Looking Ahead: Continuing to Strengthen the Foundation

As Morcon continues to grow, our commitment to safety remains steadfast—and evolves with the needs of our teams and industry standards. The Annual Safety Meeting isn’t just a once-a-year event; it’s a reflection of our ongoing investment in people, training, and a culture that empowers every team member to speak up and stay safe. With dedicated leadership, engaged field crews, and open lines of communication, we’re not just meeting safety expectations—we’re setting them.
