Delivering Excellence: MSP Terminal 1 Transformation
Over the past decade, travelers through Terminal 1 at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP) have watched the airport undergo a dramatic transformation. What was once a 1960s-era facility is now a modern, tech-forward gateway to the Twin Cities—thanks to the Metropolitan Airports Commission’s (MAC) Operational Improvements (OI) program.
As one of the general contractors with a consistent on-site presence, the Morcon Construction team has played an integral role in this ambitious, multi-phase modernization effort. Working alongside MAC and project partners, our team has helped deliver critical improvements that expanded the terminal footprint, consolidated security screening, modernized infrastructure, and enhanced the overall passenger experience.
But completing large-scale construction inside one of the nation’s busiest airports has required more than technical skill—it’s demanded flexibility, precision, and coordination at every level.
Building While the Airport Never Sleeps
Working in a fully operational airport has meant that construction can’t disrupt daily operations or compromise passenger safety. To meet this challenge, our team and crews adjust work hours around flight schedules and peak passenger times, often performing high-intensity work overnight or during off-peak hours.
Security protocols add another layer of complexity. All team members have been required to meet stringent airport clearance standards and follow TSA-mandated procedures. Every material delivery, tool, and piece of equipment is logged, inspected, and tracked to maintain compliance and safety.

Clean, Organized, and Operational
With construction taking place in active public areas, cleanliness and organization are essential. We implement rigorous housekeeping and material-handling procedures to keep work zones contained, minimize dust and noise, and maintain clear, safe walkways for travelers and airport staff.
At the same time, we coordinate with airport operations to ensure critical systems and facilities remained fully functional—from ticketing counters and baggage claim to HVAC and life safety systems. This has required strategic sequencing, real-time communication, and a collaborative mindset shared across all project partners.
A Decade of Dedication
Through consistent on-site presence, teamwork, and attention to detail, Morcon is proud to have helped bring MAC’s vision for a modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly terminal to life. The result: brighter, more accessible spaces that will serve as a welcoming gateway for decades to come.
The project’s scope has included:
-
Improved public space throughout the entire terminal (ticketing, baggage claim, restrooms, lobby areas, etc.)
-
Expanded terminal footprint for better passenger flow
-
Consolidated security screening
-
Enhanced lighting, flooring, and finishes to elevate the traveler experience
Delivering this scale of improvement in a live environment required more than construction—it required partnership, problem-solving, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
