Project Scope: A Unified Public Safety and Operations Center

This multi-phase project represents the largest capital improvement investment in MAC’s history and focuses on consolidating emergency response and airport operations into a cutting-edge facility. The new 158,000 SF Public Safety and Operations Center, set for completion in Spring 2027, will house:

  • MSP Airport Police Department
  • Emergency Communications Center (911 public safety answering point)
  • Airside Operations
  • Other essential airport security functions

The facility will connect to Fire Station 2, a 25,000 sq. ft. aircraft rescue and firefighting station, a project completed by Morcon Construction in 2024. Located near the MSP air traffic control tower, Fire Station 2 is 50% larger than its predecessor and features modernized living spaces, individual bunk rooms, and expanded meeting areas.

Construction Progress

The project began in the Fall of 2024 and is progressing steadily. Thus far, the construction team has demolished several small buildings, completed site cleaning, earthwork, and poured concrete for the adjacent parking lot. The elevator tower, sally port, and entryway to the security and jail building are all quickly taking shape. Currently on-site are crews for earthwork, concrete, steel, electrical work, and waterproofing, with construction activity set to ramp up in the coming months as weather continues to improve.

Sustainability at the Core

MSP is committed to sustainable airport operations, and this project aligns with that mission by incorporating LEED-certified design elements, including:

  • Improved insulation and energy-efficient mechanical systems for reduced energy consumption
  • A water reclamation system, capturing rainwater for non-potable uses, cutting potable water usage by an estimated 53%
  • Sustainable landscaping with native plantings and fescue grasses, requiring no additional irrigation once established

Looking Ahead

With the completion of the Public Safety and Operations Center scheduled for 2027, MSP will have a new state-of-the-art emergency response hub, ensuring enhanced coordination and situational awareness for daily operations and emergency events alike. Morcon Construction is proud to contribute to MSP’s legacy of excellence, delivering a facility that strengthens safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency for years to come.
